Bierzglowski Castle

Before the Bierzglowski castle was erected, on the same place was another castle, destoyed by Lithuanians in 1263. This gothic castle is one of the oldest defensive buildings, raised by Teutonic Order. In times of it's biggest splendour, Tetonic Knights had a seat there. The history of the castle is full of destructions and reconstructions of it. During the Thirteen Years' War and in 1410 Poland was the owner of the castle. Back from 1520 the castle passed to Torun. And again it was ruined during batles between confederates and citizens in 1769. Latterly in XIX century repar and architectural works started. It was Bishop of Chelmno's Diocesan that continuated these works and in 1929 took charge of the castle. After the Secon World War, in the castle was House of Social Welfare. From 1992 Diocesan of Torun is the owner of Bierzglowski Castle.

Whole building consist of pentagonal main castle and 3 farming (agricultural, economical) buildings. To enter the castle there was only one way - by the bridge over a wide moat. In addition the castle was surrounded by a double courtain. In a west wing, there is still well remained eating and assembly chamber. Situated over a main gate bas-relief presents three knights and is dated back from 1300. This is the oldest, clay sculpture finded in the prusian region.

How to get to the Castle

The castle is in a village named as this castle - Zamek Bierzglowski. It is about 16 kilometers to west from Torun. By car, the jurney lasts about quarter of an hour, by bike it is 45 minutes. Besides there is regular bus ply between Torun and Zamek Bierzgloski. Below is a map that will show you the way.
